Customs data show that China’s coal net imports reached 130 million tons this year

July 28, 2021

Preliminary data released by the Customs on Wednesday showed that the cumulative amount of coal exports in the first 10 months of China fell by 13.7% from the same period last year to 16.3 million tons. Due to the recent large increase in domestic coal prices, coal exports in the fourth quarter may also shrink. According to the current export volume, China's coal export volume may be around 20 million tons this year, which is about 2 million tons lower than the same period of last year, while the net import volume will reach 130 million tons, an increase of nearly 20 million tons from last year. import.

Data show that coal exports in October were 1.21 million tons, down 40% year-on-year. The cumulative export value in the first 10 months totaled 1.881 billion U.S. dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 8.4%, and the average export Price was 115.4 U.S. dollars per ton, an increase of 6% year-on-year.

According to statistics, in the first three quarters of this year, imports of coal amounted to 121.87 million tons, an increase of 42.2% year-on-year, of which imports in September reached 15.32 million tons. According to the analysis, the total coal import volume this year will exceed 150 million tons, and it is expected that the import volume will maintain at 150-180 million tons in the next two years.

According to the Report of the National Energy Administration, compared with the previous three quarters, China's coal import growth rate is expected to fall in the fourth quarter. As the effect of energy-saving and emission-reduction measures becomes apparent, coal demand in coking, ferro-alloy and steel production industries will slow down. Therefore, it is expected that the supply and demand of coal will be basically balanced in the fourth quarter.

Customs data also showed that China's coke exports soared this year compared to the same period last year. In the first 10 months, the country exported 2.64 million tons of coke, while export volume was only 420,000 tons in the same period of last year. Among them, 220,000 tons of coke was exported in October. The average export price in the first three quarters also rose from US$360.1/ton last year to US$418/ton, an increase of 16%.
